FEVER AND

YOUR CHILD

How to Take Temperature: Scanning forehead in children older than one year and rectally in babies is best, but even oral, ear, or axillary thermometers are just fine!

Definition of Fever: 100.4F or higher

Treatment of Fever: Acetaminophen (Tylenol but can be any brand) up to every 4-6hours or Ibuprofen (Motrin but can be any brand) up to every 6-8 hours (follow dosing instructions on bottle)

When to Be Concerned:

Has other symptoms, such as a stiff neck, severe headache, severe sore throat, severe ear pain, an unexplained rash, or repeated vomiting or diarrhea.
Has had a seizure.

Has been in a very hot place, such as an overheated car.
